Ψ      What is it?

•          It supports the rotation reduction gear drive assembly, transferring power from the stepper motor to the rotation shaft

Ψ      What's wrong with it?

•          Incorrect length, OEM spindle shoulder never actually contacts spacer/gear. This prevents accurate or repeatable preload on thrust bearings. Preload is determined solely by the tightness the user places on the fastener.

•          Narrow shoulder does not precisely locate reduction gear

Ψ      Result

•          Premature bearing failure

•          Erratic rotation, placement error

•          Intermittent “Lost steps” error

Ψ      How should it work?

•          Spindle shaft shoulder contacts spacer/gear when fastener is tight, precisely locating the gear and compressing the wave spring

•          The wave spring is designed to be compressed exactly .015” to attain the correct bearing preload of 12 lbs

Ψ      Corrective action

•          New spindle with corrected geometry

•          CNC machined to +/- .0002” tolerance

•          Larger shoulder for precise gear location and planarity

•          Increased slot depth for easier installation

•          Spindle length now compresses wave spring .015” to precisely preload thrust bearings to Mfg spec of 12 lbs.

•          Preload is no longer effected by fastener tightness
